Kevin’s unique story has recently attracted attention from the media, including Forbes Online who ran a profiling piece here.
Originally from Wexford in Ireland, at the age of 15 Kevin left to join Leeds United and spent three years there before joining Nottingham Forest.
His career however was brutally cut short by injury and at the age of just 19, he had to endure a gruelling treatment process including ten operations and a huge amount of physio - he was lucky not to have his leg amputated.
“My life was turned upside down effectively. I was very lucky to have walked out of hospital on crutches and that is really when my journey into really intense rehabilitation started.
“Working with the physios in rehabilitation, it was more the psychological impact it had on me. In that period I thought it was something I could really enjoy and potentially carve out a career in.”
Inspired by his own recovery from injury, Kevin qualified as a physiotherapist in 2006. He took his first job at Birmingham City Football Club, before going on to help set-up a successful private physiotherapy business that was acquired by Ascenti in 2010.
“In that period having the injury and going through the injury I could really relate to my patients and the psychology of what they are going through.”
“What we wanted to offer was Premier League level physio to members of the general public. The principles are very similar whether that individual’s goal is to walk pain-free, do a 5k jog or do an ultra-marathon.”
Kevin has since played a pivotal role in Ascenti’s national expansion and his experience has helped to shape our results-focused clinical philosophy.
“I absolutely love what I do, I actually feel it a privilege to do what I’m doing and we don’t feel we are anywhere close to the end of this journey.
“When you help someone come back from injury, run a marathon and raise money for charity – that’s when you know you are in the right profession.”
